Case Study

The Photon Migration Group at Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital contracted Innovations in Optics to design and prototype a high-resolution diffuse optical tomography (DOT) instrument and fiber optic probe for co-registration of DOT and X-ray mammographic images. We conceived of and developed a novel solution resulting in more than an order of magnitude improvement in both resolution and image acquisition time over any other system in existence. The optical system was able to exploit the high contrast in the optical regime to hemoglobin, water and lipids. This approach allowed the two imaging modalities to be correlated, providing improved optical reconstruction and improved outcome for the patient. This technology promises to offer the clinician a powerful new tool in the battle against breast cancer.
