Innovations in Optics works with consumer companies to create innovative
solutions with light that can be cost-effectively deployed to enhance
current products or create completely new products.
The following case study provides an example of how we work.
Case Study
A multi-billion dollar consumer product company wanted to make
an existing mass market product "smart." They had an
idea of including a sensor that would allow the product to identify
a variety of materials — a function that previously required
human intervention.
We conducted extensive tests on the materials
to learn their spectral signature and then created the algorithms
necessary to differentiate between them. The key to the success of this project was converting
a sophisticated spectrometer, which typically costs thousands
of dollars, into a device that is only an inch on a side and
cost a few dollars to make in production. An innovative solution was
created that used low cost detectors, plastic injection molded
lenses, and replicated holographic gratings.
Within four months, Innovations in Optics provided its customer with a fully toleranced
system that was ready to be prototyped and test marketed.
